Electricity Smart Metering

Why smart meters?

Internationally, smart metering has led to lower electricity demand and a reduction in energy consumption which is supported by accurate consumptions readings.

Our smart meters are next generation electricity meters. Through our smart metering technology, consumers can proactively monitor their electricity consumption, track available electricity balances, compare consumption data to previous months and allow export of this data for own analysis.

Unlike conventional meters, our smart meters enable consumers to optimise and improve their overall electricity consumption.

Basic Residential

Our basic smart prepaid meter is a Class 1 or better single phase and three phase meter.

This robust basic smart prepaid meter is generally installed in a secure kiosk outside the consumer’s residence. This installation method allows access to these meters by our technicians without the need for access to the consumer’s residence. It also eliminates the tampering of meters.

As part of our basic smart prepaid metering offer, consumers have access to our website and smartphone app, can choose from a variety of vending platforms to top-up their electricity and receive low credit level warnings via SMS notifications.

Our basic smart prepaid meter also has the ability to have a remote keypad linked to the meter which will allow the consumer to manually enter top-ups from any UNIPIN vendor.

Commercial

Our commercial smart prepaid meter provides both for a pre- and post-paid (conventional) offering.

As part of our basic smart prepaid metering offer, consumers have access to our website and smartphone app, and can choose from a variety of vending platforms to top-up their electricity; as well as receive low credit level warnings via SMS notifications.

Water Metering

We offer smart water meters with communication modules, whereby we can receive automated readings without having access to the premises.

Web Portal

All MidCity Utilities consumers have access to their account details through our website.

First-time users would need to register their details and create a profile. Our dedicated support team can assist you with this process. Kindly submit the complete vending agreement form, click here to download, to customercare@midcityutilities.co.za

Our website provides the following remote functionality: 

  • historical consumption data and trends
  • real-time dashboard displays
  • comprehensive consumption and billing reporting on a number of levels (e.g. kWh, Rand value, etc.)

Smartphone App

Consumers can purchase prepaid electricity on the go via our MidCity Utilities smartphone app available for download on the Android Playstore or the iOS App Store.

Our smartphone app provides the following remote functionality:

FAQ

What do I require to purchase a Unipin voucher?

All you have to do is ask for a Unipin voucher for the amount of your choice. Please note that this is not an MidCity Utilities electricity Unipin voucher, but an universal Unipin voucher. Therefore, you do not have to give the cashiers your meter number.

Where do I get the meter serial number?

SMS the word Balance to 37823 and you will receive your meter serial number together with the balance on your meter. Your meter serial number is also included in the SMS that is sent to you as a low balance/credit warning. This SMS will be sent to you approximately 48 hours before your credit runs out.

How do I know that credit has been loaded?

You will receive an SMS with the value of the token as well as the 20 digit code already loaded on your meter.

How do I check my balance?

SMS the word Balance to 37823 to receive your balance. A low balance/credit warning SMS will be sent to you approximately 48 hours before your credit runs out.

My token is not loading. What do I do?
